Top 5 - Summer Road Trip Songs
Ah, yes, the great American tradition of piling the family into the car and hitting the road to vacations unknown. Well, they’re probably known, but adventures unknown. Do we still do this? As a 70’s/80’s kid we did this a lot, mostly to Lake Chelan in Washington and Seaside in Oregon. Alas, dad never let us control the AM radio the family truckster had, but with the advent of walkman’s in the 80’s we could sing along to the songs of summer to our hearts' content, and our parent’s chagrin.
Here are my Top 5 Summer Road Trip Songs:
5. Ramblin’ Man - Allman Brother’s Band “Lord, I was born a ramblin’ man! Trying to make a livin’ and doing the best I can!” No idea as a kid what that meant. Maybe it was a salute for my old man.
4. Life is a Highway - Tom Cochran Too literal? There is no disqualifying the Canadian hit just because it’s perfect for the road.
3. Higher Love - Steve Winwood This one is personal. 1985, wore this tape out!
2. Pretty much anything by AC/DC. Songs that pump you up! They’ve been, pretty much, releasing the same album for 50 years, but that’s OK, we still like to crank them in the car.
1. Roadrunner - The Modern Lovers “And the highway when it’s late at night/Got the radio on”. This proto-punk classic from Jonathan Richman has a Johnny B Goode feel to it. I’ve never been to Boston, but feel like a good long drive.
What songs did I leave off this list. Let me know!
