My dad passed away way too soon some twenty years ago. He was a good father, hard worker and a good human. He retired early when the company he worked for forty some years was bought out and then closed down within three years. I’m sure, like everyone, he had big plans for retirement including travel, grandkid time and gardening. Sadly, he didn’t get much time in retirement before passing. Throughout his life he carried a camera and was a pretty darn good photographer. His job for most of his career was as a lithographer, and then as a digital color person for a larger print company, so graphics was his forte.
Recently visiting the family home (actually looking for photos for a WWI project I am working on about my grandfather) I came across a couple of big boxes of slides. I had no idea they were there; dad never shared them or mentioned them. Going through them I discovered a bunch were from his Navy days back in the late 50’s and some travels he had through the 60’s. I’ve done my best to name and date these, but some weren’t allocatable.
I wasn’t sure how to display these and share them with the world, which I think they deserve to be, so, I dropped them here, like his own little art gallery, just for you. Thanks for visiting. Please enjoy. -Charles Bressler
Dad served aboard the USS Lexington CV-16. This particular version of the Lexington was nicknamed the “Blue Ghost” by the Japanese during WWII. The boat was reported sunk by enemy forces no less than four times during the course of the war, only to appear later ready to fight. Our understanding is Cliff worked in cartography during his time aboard. The ship sailed across the Pacific in 1958 visiting Hong Kong, Japan and Islands of the South Pacific. This poor kid from Salem Oregon got to go see half the world on that ship. These are Cliff’s pictures of that trip.
