Top 5 - Music Genres That Died

Top 5 - Music Genres That Died

Like toy fads and fashion, automobile styles and furniture, all things generally come to an end. Music genres are no different and styles come and they go. Some can last forever, with a few tweaks, like straightforward rock and roll. And, some never completely go away as elements still pop up in new music (think sampling or disco beats). Here are my Top 5 music genres that did not stand the test of time (but might make a comeback!).

5. Swing/Big Band: Duke Ellington, Count Baise, Cab Calloway, Louis Armstrong.

4. Outlaw Country: Waylon Jennings, Hank Williams Jr, Chris Christofferson, Willie Nelson, and, of course, Johnny Cash.

3. Gangster Rap: N.W.A, Easy E, 2Pac, Biggie, Ice Cube, Ice-T, Mobb Deep, Dre, Snoop Dog.

2. New Wave: Talking Heads, Blondie, The Cars, Eurythmics, The Go-Go’s, Pretenders, Roxy Music.

1. Grunge: Pearl Jam, Mudhoney, Screaming Trees, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, 7 Year Bitch, Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, The Smashing Pumpkins.

Honorable mentions: Hair metal (Motley Crue, Poison, Warrant, Cinderella), Brit Pop (Oasis, The Verve), Easy listening (Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Dean Martin), Disco (BeeGees, Donna Summer, Chic), Acid Jazz (Jamiroquai, The Brand New Heavies), Nu Metal (Limp Bizkit, Korn, POD, SlipKnot), 2nd/3rd Wave Ska (Maddness, No Doubt, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Reel Big Fish, The Specials, Sublime)..

What is your favorite bygone music genre. Let me know in the comments.
