George Carlin on Life

George Carlin on Life

Last night as the recording on the new episode came to a close, we ended as we always do, with something positive. I read a quote from one of my all-time favorite comedians, and human beings, George Carlin. Spoiler alert, the quote is this: "We have multiplied our possessions but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often. We’ve learned how to make a living but not a life. We’ve added years to life, not life to years."

“We’ve added years to life, but not life to years.” Absolute brilliance, as expected. I’ve been pondering that line for a few days since putting together our show notes. Maybe those “Live, Laugh, Love” signs aren’t so corny after all. But I’m also thinking about how much time in particular I, myself, spent participating in the grind. 60, 70, 80-hour work weeks, trying to make it happen. Only taking breaks from that grind to spend time with the kid on my days (never sacrificed those).

Twenty some years later I’m able to look back on all the hustle for work I did, the long hours, the sacrifice and wonder what it was all for. The reward? I don’t really know. I spent a ton of time and sweat equity trying to build a business and walked away with only about $12K after four years of toil. I got some other things out of it, some tangible, some just simple lessons, but I worked my ass off for those years, taking a lower salary than I should have, and not much appreciation. I don’t harbor sour grapes as there is absolutely nothing to do about it now, except continue using those lessons learned.

I would never say to anyone, “Avoid the hustle at all costs.” Money really does come in handy in this world. But be careful and discover what you really want for yourself. An individual has to evaluate their own situation and decide for themselves what that situation is worth…and, really, what they are worth. How much they truly need. I would suggest filling your life with all the things as often as possible: love, adventure, heartbreak, chances, stubbed toes, fresh air, green spaces, music, laughter, ocean views, bare feet, and puppies. Cats are also acceptable (unless you’re allergic).

And, by all means, I wouldn’t look back on the past with any regrets, thinking that I may have missed out on something. Instead, I’m looking on those as things that just haven’t happened…yet.
