Charles' Never Too Late to Review - Wednesday on Netflix
I have to say from the get go, that Jenna Ortega is a delight! in the Wednesday series on Netflix. The show came out in October and has been given the green light for a second season. In fact, all of the actors I really enjoyed with the exception of Catherine Zeta Jones. Nothing against her, per se, she just didn’t do it for me and did not exude what the role is for me.
Wednesday is an 8 episode horror dark comedy directed, (at least half) by none other than Tim Burton who knows a things or two about dark comedies. Wednesday, the character, is sent to a boarding school for abnormal kids where her parents attended, met and fell in love, mad nearing overly gross love. The school, Nevermore Academy, has werewolves, sirens, shape shifters and other societal undesirables (read creatures) attending, gothic architecture, dark halls, secret rooms, the kind of place where a member of the Adams Family would fit right in, and it’s right smack dab in the middle of a little idyllic northeastern town.
Wednesday is a brilliant kid with a penchant for the macabre and mysteries. There is a underlying mystery throughout, plus some family history stuff she needs to sort out, as well as just the crappy social stuff of being an American teenager.
The show is definitely geared towards a younger, teenage audience. I felt the series ran an episode or two longer than it needed to with some of the teenage cliches, love interests and character mis-understanding that come with any show for a teen audience. And, I figured out the bad guys (both of them) right away so the mystery wasn’t really a mystery as I watched and waited for the Scooby Doo reveal. But, the overall story was good and the acting was great. The moments of levity are great, especially with Thing, the sentient hand. There was even a one episode guest appearance of Fred Armisen as Uncle Fester that was just delightful.
I would recommend and give it: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ out of five.
